Built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner as the base for the Orfeó Català and financed by popular subscription, the Palau de la Música Catalana represents a symbolic emotional heritage for a whole people who identify with its history.
The Concert Auditorium – one of the most distinctive in the world – has been for over a hundred years the privileged setting for the musical life, both national and international, of the city of Barcelona. An architectural jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau, the only concert venue in this style to be listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (4th December 1977), which today represents an essential landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia.
The Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música , as the sole controlling body since January 2012, oversees the activities of the house choir, the Orfeó Català, as well as those of the Escola Coral and the Cor de Cambra of the Palau de la Música Catalana on the basis of the values of excellence, participation, social commitment and the Catalan identity. Thus, while remaining one of the most authentic symbols of Catalan culture, the Palau and the Orfeó, as open, dynamic institutions, foster music, choral singing, knowledge and dissemination of their heritage, and the social and cultural cohesion of the country.
Each day, Palau de la Musica Catalana organise guided visits of the modernist concert hall and if available, the Lluis Millet and Musica de Camara halls. Tickets go on sale a week before the tour and buying them in advance is recommended as places are limited to 55 people per visit. The tour lasts over 55 minutes.
